BARATak: Chronicles of Kunat ep.1

The sweetest taboo

Funny thing, this subject of money. It still ranks high, in my mind, on the list of “shh..-‘wag-natin pag-usapan-yan” categories; a last bastion of secrecy that probably supplants the most scandalous of tabloid chismis. Your more likely to hear the details of an ex-President’s thespian daughter slobbering over her pathetic failure in keeping men from leaving her bedside, but not about her collective endorsement figures. Or view some college hottie revealing her goods on the latest “(Fill in the blank of school, company or province) Scandal” but I doubt if she’ll share how much her monthly allowance is.

I always wondered how Kristy Fermins’ interview with a famous derma employee would have gone, with a financial inquiry slant. I’d imagine that after the infamous derma-babe spilled the beans (or in this case, spilled his …oh never mind, she swallows pala), Kristy would ask, “so, magkano ang suweldo mo ngayon at ang gastos mo sa bahay kada buwan?” More likely, Ms. Derma would feign disbelief and reply, “Naku ma’am Kristy, ‘di ko ‘ata kaya ma-reveal ‘yan e..medyo confi kasi e..”

We engage in small talk about how stocks, gas prices and interest rates are faring. We share investment tips, success stories, and horrific loan default gossip. But that doesn’t give us a clue about anything on a personal level.

Why do we have some bizarre aversion to discussing our financial issues head-on. I surmise it has to do with that new-fangled term “Personal Finance.” Kaya ‘nga ayaw pag-usapan, e personal nga e.  But let’s get it straight: financial security, next to your religious morals, the government’s rule of law and the upcoming season of Pinoy Big Brother, influences how you make life choices now and in the future. How so? I’d like to attempt to compartmentalize this by looking at financial INsecurity caused by the common behavioral culprits:

·   Not controlling or understanding your own expenses

·    Making “utang”

·    Inconsistent pattern of savings (or not saving at all)

·   Working at a job you dislike just to pay the bills

Let’s take a peek at each on the next BARATak episode…
