Tropical Cyclone Warning: Typhoon "KAREN" (NURI)
Issued at 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, 20 August 2008

Typhoon "KAREN" has slowed down slightly while crossing Babuyan Channel.

Location of Center: (as of 4:00 p.m.)    
90 kms West Northwest of Aparri, Cagayan or 100 kms Northeast of Laoag City
Coordinates:     19.0°N, 120.9°E
Strength:     Maximum sustained winds of 140 kph near the center and Gustiness of up to 170 kph
Movement:     West Northwest at 15 kph

Public Storm Warning Signal Number 1 elsewhere now lowered.

Typhoon"KAREN" is expected to enhance the southwest monsoon and bring rains over Luzon especially in the western section and Western Visayas which may trigger falshfloods and landslides.

Residents along the coastal areas under Public Storm Warning Signal Number 2 and 3 are alerted against big waves and storm surges generated by this tropical cyclone.

The public and the disaster coordinating councils concerned are advised to take appropriate actions and watch for the next bulletin to be issued at 11 p.m. today.
