Chinese milk, yoghurt, ice cream affected by melamine… might be in your coffee too.
22 September 2008All across Asia, countries are banning and testing all milk/dairy products made from China. At first I thought that the affected product was just the powdered milk made by Sanlu. However, more and more products seem to have been "infused" with melamine. For those who don't know, an estimate of 50,000 children in China got sick. A few hundreds have been diagnosed with kidney ailments and 4 children have died from it.
Locally, the BFAD has stopped the distribution of milk products manufactured by Mengniu and Inner Mongolia Yili. I wonder if there are other food products, not just milk that may be tainted with toxic chemicals. Are products like medicines, vitamins, candies, cookies, chips, sodas, juices, teas and so many other food products scrutinized carefully by the BFAD before allowing its sale here in the market? I tried accessing the BFAD's website for its official announcement but I just kept getting a page load error.
Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong have banned all milk products from China. According to Foxnews, there are 22 milk brands that are affected but the names were not mentioned. The candy "White Rabbit" also tested positive for melamine. I think this candy was already locally banned or recalled months ago due to formaldehyde content.
Ice cream products that used milk as ingredient also tested positive (can't remember if it was in Hong Kong or Singapore). For those who love going to Starbucks, Seattles and other coffee chains, its best to ask the store to show you the brand of milk that they use for their creams and ice creams just to be sure (I wonder if they will though… is it supposed to be a secret ingredient?).
