There's a new television show on Fox Channel that goes by the name Fringe.  It features FBI Special Agent Olivia Dunham, formerly institutionalized mad scientist Walter Bishop, and his son with a shady past Peter as they investigate aspects of fringe science (telepathy, levitation, invisibility, reanimation, etc). Peter is played by Joshua Jackson, from Dawson's Creek, who also played Charlie as Emilio Estevez's favorite hockey student.

All over the world, a series of apparent experiments collectively referred to as "the pattern" are occurring for reasons unknown. Olivia, Peter, and Walter are in charge of investigating these strange events to determine their source. Connected to "the pattern" is a company called Massive Dynamics, which is a leading global research company that holds the patents for a number of new and important technologies.

Why Fringe Works For Me

Yes, I'm a fan of X-Files, and the show Fringe's  "the pattern theme" is what the "ufo theme/alien abduction/invasion" is to X-Files.

Other similarities of X-files and Fringe:

• While “The X-Files” told us the truth is out there, “Fringe” posits the equally vague notion that “Everything is Part of a Pattern.”
• Fringe has Massive Dynamics Corporation as mysterious financially powerful company, X-files had the Syndicate.  A group of power brokers and influential men that "create the future".
• Both shows have an aura which speaks "trust no one" emanating from the characters.
• Government Cover-Ups and Conspiracies
• Recently, Fringe introduced a bald guy called The Observer, who has been monitored by the agents to show up on a lot of pictures in important events that even date way back.  This may well be their version of X-Files' CSM, or Cigarette smoking Man where both characters briefly recur in some episodes surrounded by an aura of mystery and foreboding.

The introduction of the Observer character adds an interestingly fun thing for the viewer to do.  It’s kind of like find Waldo in the picture, where keen viewers could be on the look out for this bald man as he appears just to watch important events.  Such websites that delve on past episodes for Observer searching can be found here in this link.

I do believe Fringe would work as an excellent escape from all those reality shows, super bone thin models shows, and bitch slapping tv series who explore materialism, sex, etc.
