From Taiwan to the NBA: The Joe Alexander Story

7 July 2008

The most improbable and certainly the most interesting story of the just concluded 2008 NBA Draft belongs to Joe Alexander, a 6-8 1/2 forward from West Virginia University.

Alexander's path to the lottery began in the hardcourts of Asia, growing up in Taiwan, Beijing and Hong Kong.  He is literally a self-made player, getting to the NBA through hard work and by having an unwavering dream.  His tale consists of endless rewinds of Michael Jordan and AND1 tapes, hours and hours in lonely gyms, mail order jump soles, and countless nights sleeping in locker room couches.  The product is an NBA ready forward with a 40 inch vertical leap and a sweet mid range jumper.

Ateneo Blue Eagles: UAAP Season 71 Lineup (2008) Part 2

2 July 2008

For Part 1 click here

Kirk Long - still more known for his buzzer beating fall away to beat UST and the controversial sub-in for Laterre that was protested by DLSU than for his on court play.  He has shown that he can be a solid swingman offensively and defensively, showing excellent poise even as a freshman.  Will be counted on more to play the point this year although from all indications, his instincts for tempo control, dribbling, passing, and floor leadership all have a long way to go.  Is too focused mainly on getting the ball past midcourt instead of trying to set up or getting his head up to find open teammates.  Has mysteriously become more hesitant on offense, repeatedly passing up open shots and ruining his rhythm with unnecessary pump fakes.  Has the tools and physical skills to be a major contributor this year but needs to have the confidence — wont be surprised if Black puts him back full time to his more natural swing position after a few games.

La Salle beats Ateneo in OT in Fil oil match

7 June 2008

Preseason my foot! Any blue vs green game certainly deserves watching be it exhibition, preseason, regular season or what have you.  The rivalry always brings out the best from both and this afternoon's game proved that once again.

Ateneo was on top by two with around a minute left in regulation and looked well on their way to a win when La Salle freshman Bagatsing swished a three pointer to give them the lead.  Ateneo came back after a time out with a Chris Tiu trey from the corner to take back the advantage.  The Archers ran a perfect give and go to Bagatsing who came through again to tie the game.  Buenafe and Baclao failed to convert for ADMU as the buzzer sounded to signal overtime.  DLSU was on fire in the OT, hitting shot after shot to win the game.

4 June 2008

To whet the appetite of avid UAAP followers of both teams, the Ateneo Blue Eagles will take on the De La Salle Green Archers in an elimination round game of the ongoing preseason Fil-oil Flying V tournament.  Although this is a preseason tournament, expect nothing less from the two archrivals as both teams always bring out the best from each other.

Game time is set at 3pm, June 7, Saturday. Venue is The Arena in San Juan.  The juniors game between  the two schools' high school teams precedes this at 1pm.  Mayor JV Ejercito has made preparations for traffic and crowd control as he anticipates a big turnout around the Santolan area.  TV coverage for the game will be on a delayed basis, 5pm for the seniors game on C/S RPN9 and 7pm (juniors)  and 9pm (seniors) on BTV.

The dream matchup makes fans, league officials and the TV network moguls salivate.  Boston GM Danny Ainge set the wheels in motion at the start of the season by bringing in All Stars Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett to join Paul Pierce in a bold move that woke up Celtic fans around the globe and stirred the dormant leprechauns.
