Mini Laptop Showdown MSI Wind vs HP Mini note 2133 vs Acer Aspire One vs Asus 1000

15 September 2008

With a lot of people asking me now which UMPC (ultra mobile pc) is good for them, I just had to create this article to consolidate all the ideas and details so I can just refer the queries here.  The conclusion comes in the first paragraph: a toss up between the MSI wind and Acer Aspire One.

If I had to choose one, it would be the MSi wind. Reason? For price and features of more memory and hard disk space, the wind takes my vote.  But this vote is only for the 6 cell version.

Sony recalls VAIO laptops due to overheating problems

4 September 2008

Sony issued an important statement today (9/4/2008) regarding their VAIO laptops.  The affected models include:     * VGN-TZ100 series    * VGN-TZ200 series    * VGN-TZ300 series    * VGN-TZ2000 series.

The issue involves a small number of units which may overheat due to a wiring problem. Sony has initiated a voluntary program to perform a free inspection and, if necessary, a repair to ensure these units.  To find out if your VAIO notebook is one of the affected units, please visit this link: http://esupport.sony.com/fixmypc. You will be prompted to input your product code and serial number located on the bottom of the notebook. It will be checked automatically against the range of affected units. If you find that your PC is one of the affected models, follow the instructions on the website and make arrangements for an inspection. You may also call the VAIO TZ customer hotline at 1-888-526-6219 to determine whether your notebook computer is affected by this issue and whether service is required.  At no charge, Sony will provide an inspection and, if necessary, on-site repair at your home or office. Alternatively, you can ship your notebook to their service center. Source:http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/news-item.pl?template_id=1&news_id=272

Google Chrome browser faster than Apple Safari

3 September 2008

By now, you've heard it on all the news, and on some of the blogs.  Google's latest product to rule the web galaxy with an iron fist, the google chrome browser.  Downloading the product is quick, and features importing settings from your default browser.

Offhand personal use leads to a quick conclusion that this browser loads faster than Apple Safari, which is the slowest even among Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer 7.

Some new features

All yummy features like tabbed browsing, etc., are featured in Google Chrome, with the one convenient addition that the url bar (where you type  web addresses like http://www.financemanila.nt) acts as an instant search window for google.

How to watch and upscale downloaded movies through ps3

15 August 2008

What is upscaling? Upscaling is the conversion of a lower resolution video image (e.g. 720×480p) to a higher resolution (e.g. 1280×720p).  Blue ray disc owners need not concern themselves with upscaling technology, as it is lower resolution video discs that need to be upscaled to almost blueray level.

Currently, there are leading brandnamed Panasonic, Samsung, and Sony non-blueray dvd players available in the market for 4,000 to 6,000 pesos depending on various feature differences.

However, this article is for PS3 owners who want to take advantage of their built in upscaling technology.  The Ps3 already supported upscaling via its version 1.80 firmware update last year, chances are, you already have the update, because current version now runs at about v 2.42.

how to remove smitfraud zlob virus

3 August 2008

This year alone, a lot of friends have asked for my help on how to remove the smitfraud zlob virus.

SmitFraud or W32/SmitFraud.A is a type of spyware that installs itself into a computer via adware, without the user's knowledge. Most of the time, it installs itself after the computer user installs a fake codec, such as BrainCodec, PCodec or VideoKeyCodec. These seemingly innocent files came from peer to peer download sites/softwares like limewire, dc++, and torrent downloads.  Best thing to do is if after downloading such multimedia file that does not play properly as the audio music or movie that you were expecting is not to click "download codec needed to play file", or something like that.

Bayantel PLDT mydsl Globe dsl 2008 review

5 June 2008

Sure, they've raised their mainstream speeds anywhere from 256 to 384kbps, but what has really changed?  Sadly, there is no best plan to choose from as of this time.  Maybe the whole Philippines is oversubscribed vis a vis their undersea cable capacities.

For PLDT, residential or business plans alike, same old PLDT problem of connection dropping or zero bandwidth problems.  The latter means you are still connected but no data coming in our going out.  The former is self explanatory, meaning frequent disconnects.  And the very pressing problem of not giving us our advertised speeds.  Add to that the perennial problem of having too tough a time to get through to their tech support.  There is also the problem of competence level of their tech supports!

Biggest Thinnest Flash SSD : Samsung 256gb

28 May 2008

Samsung unveiled in prototype form at a Samsung event in Taipei, has the same form factor as a 9.5-millimeter high 2.5-inch hard-disk drive for which it is designed to be a drop-in replacement.

Solid-state disks (SSDs) are an emerging type of storage device that use flash memory chips in place of the spinning magnetic disks used in hard-disk drives. The memory chips mean the drives are more sturdy and typically have a higher performance but the per-byte storage cost is also much higher, so they are generally more expensive. That has largely restricted them to niche applications but as flash prices come down they are expected to become more widely used.

How to remove mebroot financial virus

26 May 2008

Mebroot trojan is one of the newest trojan threats to hit the Web in early 2008. Its main destructive payload is infecting the Master Boot Record code and wreaking havoc on the infected system. This pest installs a rootkit in early stages of the system boot process, which hides the presence of the Mebroot trojan on your system.

A rootkit is a malicious program that hides deep in a computer's operating system and can be difficult to remove.

Since December, Hypponen said they've seen alpha and beta versions of the Mebroot rootkit but believe it has now been RTMed, the term usually used for a legitimate piece of software that's entered production after testing.
