Lenovo S10 and HP Mini 1000 threatens MSI Wind, compared and reviewed

29 November 2008

The MSI Wind may be about to be blown over by new entrants to the full computer UMPC game.  First, the Lenovo s10 comes along with a 1Kg mini-notebook for the same price. Take a look at the specs.

The Lenovo S10 arrived last September and retails for about $699, which is the same price for the Wind.

Highlights for the 10.2inch unit include a keyboard 85% the size of a regular size keyboard, ExpressCard slot (useful for a 3G modem, not found in other UMPCs), and Intel's Atom CPU (which is proving to cope with Windows XP on most mini-notes).

Intel core i7 leaps over core 2 duo and quad core

19 November 2008

Remember how the energy efficient core 2 duo ran rings around its predecessors coreduo and centrino and centrino M?

Well, Intel now has a new chip, which is codenamed Intel Core i7 Nehalem Processor.  This wafer is said to be generally 40% faster than the fastest quad core, and over 50% faster than the fastest most expensive core 2 duo processor!

Available model numbers are :

Core i7 (large) vs. Core 2 – Socket LGA1366 vs. LGA775. The new Core i7 processors come with integrated memory controllers, which requires more pins for outside connection.Core i7 965 Extreme : 3.20GHz ($1100)
Core i7 940 : 2.93GH ($600)
Core i7 920 : 2.66GHz ($300)
Intel X58 Express
based motherboards will be available from launch from Intel, MSI, GIGABYTE, ASUS and EVGA.

The Motherboard for the i7 will require a new socket base form the current available boards in the market, hence and upgrade would mean virtually a total replacement.

How to overclock and flash msi wind with 1.09 bios

31 October 2008

Good news to MSI Wind owners.  The UMPC that initially shipped without overclocking features (even though other later models MSI produced had it)  now has a bios updates that enable overclocking which boosts your Atom powered Wind performance up to 25 to 30%!

The overclock is done by pressing Fn+F10 on the keyboard with an AC power plugged in. This enables 8%, 15% and 24% (1984MHz compared to 1600MHz stock) automatic overclocking. Enabling a 24% overclock will roughly give you a 30% increase in performance. The new BIOS also enhances Wind's performance by approximately 5% over the older BIOS version 1.08. The only downside of this BIOS is that it changes the fan speed, so your Wind fan may appear to be louder even when it is not overclocked. You can download the new BIOS directly from MSI here, but if you intend to upgrade, read this guide first.

Mini Laptop Showdown MSI Wind vs HP Mini note 2133 vs Acer Aspire One vs Asus 1000

15 September 2008

With a lot of people asking me now which UMPC (ultra mobile pc) is good for them, I just had to create this article to consolidate all the ideas and details so I can just refer the queries here.  The conclusion comes in the first paragraph: a toss up between the MSI wind and Acer Aspire One.

If I had to choose one, it would be the MSi wind. Reason? For price and features of more memory and hard disk space, the wind takes my vote.  But this vote is only for the 6 cell version.

Google Chrome browser faster than Apple Safari

3 September 2008

By now, you've heard it on all the news, and on some of the blogs.  Google's latest product to rule the web galaxy with an iron fist, the google chrome browser.  Downloading the product is quick, and features importing settings from your default browser.

Offhand personal use leads to a quick conclusion that this browser loads faster than Apple Safari, which is the slowest even among Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer 7.

Some new features

All yummy features like tabbed browsing, etc., are featured in Google Chrome, with the one convenient addition that the url bar (where you type  web addresses like http://www.financemanila.nt) acts as an instant search window for google.

How to watch and upscale downloaded movies through ps3

15 August 2008

What is upscaling? Upscaling is the conversion of a lower resolution video image (e.g. 720×480p) to a higher resolution (e.g. 1280×720p).  Blue ray disc owners need not concern themselves with upscaling technology, as it is lower resolution video discs that need to be upscaled to almost blueray level.

Currently, there are leading brandnamed Panasonic, Samsung, and Sony non-blueray dvd players available in the market for 4,000 to 6,000 pesos depending on various feature differences.

However, this article is for PS3 owners who want to take advantage of their built in upscaling technology.  The Ps3 already supported upscaling via its version 1.80 firmware update last year, chances are, you already have the update, because current version now runs at about v 2.42.
