How much can your money buy?
9 July 2008
June inflation up 11%… 11% ONLY??? I went shopping for groceries last night and was quite shocked at how much my total bill was. It amounted to P4,500. All I bought fit inside only four plastic bags!!! Unbelievable!!! And this is not a full grocery load. Just bought stuff mainly for my daughter's baon and snacks for the family. I did not buy any cooking ingredients, toiletries, canned goods, ice cream, imported chips, canned drinks, wet market items, detergents, etc. The most expensive item I bought was my daughter's milk (which was P474/can x 2 cans). I also indulged myself by buying four small packs of Maltesers and four Yanyan. The rest were local products like biscuits, instant noodles, tetra-packed milk and cereals. I didn't even buy pasalubong for my dog. I usually buy some doggie treats for her. She was so excited to see us come home and I felt guilty for not buying her treats. That's our Haps in the photo.
Yes We Can… from Sea to Shining Sea
26 April 2008I'm really not into American politics in a big way but I came across this video, a mix of a Barack Obama speech and a Black Eyed Peas rendition. Several celebs also have parts in this video such as Scarlett Johansson, Kate Walsh, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Adam Rodriguez (CSI Miami), Kelly Hu, Amber Valetta, Enrique Murciano (Without a Trace) and a host of others.
Its a very powerful video, excellently made and edited, and, the politics aside, the message resonates more each time I watch it. Some of the lines pertain strictly to certain segments of American history but most are meaningful even to us in this part of the world.
Here's the video:
Does having more money bring happiness?
24 April 2008Does having more money bring happiness?
Yes I think it does. What kind of problems would you rather have?
Rich people problems
- honey, we can't go to Amanpulo this summer, no more bookings
- honey, no more space to park if you buy that Jaguar
- honey, we need to fix the roof and tiles
- driver is absent
Poor people problems
- honey, we need to buy instant noodles again, we're all out
- huh, i just bought one pack the other day, didn't you halve it like we discussed
- honey, the kids would have to stop studying this June, no more tuition money
- husband is sick so he will be absent so no extra money to buy food. back to noodles
Those are not derogatory scenarios against rich nor poor. Its a reality. Read on. . .

OUTLOOK
The PSEi advances 1.45% today closing near the lows but on the whole ends the week on a 3.06% decline. It remains below the intermediate and short term trendlines as well as all of the moving averages, which by the way are pointing south. Looking at the weekly chart we see a definitive downside break of the double top's baseline. This offers a potential price objective of 2,200. Moving on to the daily timeframe, we see a near term 2,700 TP using the measured move method. Today's charts offer no signals or alerts that could imply any forthcoming trend change.
Sharpening the Saw and Life in and around FM
6 March 2008"So what did you do today?"
"Nothing."
"Again?"
Interesting one-word banter with veteran trader and FMer, Antediluvianist as we headed for lunch a couple of weeks back.
Just read whipsaw's technical reports for the past month and one gets the tentative mood of the market these days. Everyone's waiting for that one big move to resume yet again. The "W" pattern I was monitoring on the market, well it's looking more like an "M" now, as the Phisix is nearly back at the subprime lows, and we're all wondering if this is a credible sign that the market is headed further down, much to the chagrin of those who are holding some of their beloved stocks (hey, most of FM is ipit something nowadays).
