Mac Baracael and an Amazing UE vs FEU Game

26 July 2008

It's all over the news — FEU forward and leader Mac Baracael was shot from behind last Thursday and is now in the ICU but fortunately in stable condition. The suspect is still at large and it's difficult to speculate on the motives for this brazen attack, all we can do is pray and hope that this young man recovers from this, physically and emotionally.

Ateneo 3-0 in UAAP Season 71

13 July 2008

After a week and 3 games, the Ateneo Blue Eagles find themselves perched atop the standings and remain the lone undefeated team.  Even better, two of those wins have come against preseason favorites La Salle and UE.  Should the Blue faithful rejoice or worry that the team is peaking too soon?

I doubt that they are anywhere near peak form now, what with four rookies still adjusting to the UAAP style of play and Norman Black still looking for a more permanent rotation.  What their 3 wins have shown, though, is that the team is fully loaded at all spots, and seem to have the weapons for whatever the opponents may throw at them.

From Taiwan to the NBA: The Joe Alexander Story

7 July 2008

The most improbable and certainly the most interesting story of the just concluded 2008 NBA Draft belongs to Joe Alexander, a 6-8 1/2 forward from West Virginia University.

Alexander's path to the lottery began in the hardcourts of Asia, growing up in Taiwan, Beijing and Hong Kong.  He is literally a self-made player, getting to the NBA through hard work and by having an unwavering dream.  His tale consists of endless rewinds of Michael Jordan and AND1 tapes, hours and hours in lonely gyms, mail order jump soles, and countless nights sleeping in locker room couches.  The product is an NBA ready forward with a 40 inch vertical leap and a sweet mid range jumper.

Ateneo Blue Eagles: UAAP Season 71 Lineup (2008) Part 2

2 July 2008

For Part 1 click here

Kirk Long - still more known for his buzzer beating fall away to beat UST and the controversial sub-in for Laterre that was protested by DLSU than for his on court play.  He has shown that he can be a solid swingman offensively and defensively, showing excellent poise even as a freshman.  Will be counted on more to play the point this year although from all indications, his instincts for tempo control, dribbling, passing, and floor leadership all have a long way to go.  Is too focused mainly on getting the ball past midcourt instead of trying to set up or getting his head up to find open teammates.  Has mysteriously become more hesitant on offense, repeatedly passing up open shots and ruining his rhythm with unnecessary pump fakes.  Has the tools and physical skills to be a major contributor this year but needs to have the confidence — wont be surprised if Black puts him back full time to his more natural swing position after a few games.

enterprising pinoy: pacquiao diaz dvd already on sale

1 July 2008

In only a few hours after Manny Pacquiao won over David Diaz last June 28, 2008 in Mandalay Bay, the PPV pay per view movie was already available for download on torrent.

The enterprising pinoy already had this for sale on the streets of Quiapo shortly after, for only P35 to P50 a copy. Of course this irked licensee Solar Sports.

Almost simultaneously, probably different entrepreneurs were selling the same show in the internet for $10 at ebay.

The Enterprising Pinoy is a blog section that narrates how poverty has forced the average Filipino to take on unorthodox means of income that would otherwise be not thought about by an  average 9 to 5er of a first world country worker.

utopic dreams: running and recycling

30 June 2008

Starting today, i would write articles on how man's folly is ultimately doing him in.  In the Utopic dreams series, we will explore how man's pride, ego, greed, capitalism, masks, etc. are contributing to his self destruction.

First case in point. Take a look at this man encircled in yellow.  What is he doing? He's jogging every day in greenhills, like my friend in his blog prometheuscommeth at the ultra.

The greenhills jogging scene has evolved from the pioneer well to dos who ate at Mcdonald's greenhills after their "workout".  It has now included some various groups like tai ichi, aerobics, and other commuting segments have joined in as well.
