I believe a big seller is causing the drop in TEL. TEL ended up in NY yesterday. Hopefully, it also moves up on Monday and brings with it the other issues. TEL was one of the few stocks that continued to correct last week - amidst the recovery of most other issues.

PLDT union threatens to go on strike
BusinessWorld
8/12/2005 11:36:46 AM
Rommer M. Balaba

The rank-and-file union of Philippine Long Distance Telephone ( TEL [ 1,705.00 ], news, chart, profile ) Co. (PLDT) yesterday threatened to go on strike to compel management to take back the 383 workers retrenched over two years ago.

"We are ready to bring down the picket lines especially that the Supreme Court has issued a decision [on July 14] in favor of the return of our retrenched colleagues," said Pedro A. Pinlac, national president of the Manggagawa sa Komunikasyon ng Pilipinas.

The PLDT management retrenched the workers effective Dec. 31, 2002 after declaring their positions redundant.

"Obviously they know about the order but still they blocked them [workers] from entering their respective offices," Mr. Pinlac said as the union yesterday tried to escort the workers inside the building.

PLDT spokesperson, Ramon R. Isberto, said management has not received a copy of the Supreme Court decision, reinstating the workers. "We could not act unless we have received a copy, we cannot comment until we have studied it. But I do hope the union will not resort to a strike as this will only compound the situation," Mr. Isberto said.

PLDT and socially responsible investment?

Postby rt10601 » Sun Aug 21, 2005 4:00 am

I am a US-based investor with a socially responsible portfolio. I am studying a possible investment in PHI.

The SRI justification for investmetn in PHI is that telecommunications in general enhance the ability of local communities to interact with the global community. Local communities with access to communications are more able to protect their rights and interests than are isolated communities.

Unfortunately, I have been unable to find much information about PHI's applied social and environmental ethics. Does anyone know of any reasons a socially responsible investor would or would not invest in this particular company?

Welcome to FM!

AFAIK, PHI/TEL is a socially responsible company. You can check their link @: http://www.pldt.com.ph/

Think of their acquisition of wireless subsidiary - Pilipino Telephone Co. (Piltel), ..no more environmentally ugly telephone poles will be built around the city/country...or at least there will be less of them.

Good luck investing here! We need more people like you.

:)

PLDT promo to stay

Postby obelix » Mon Aug 22, 2005 7:43 am

Clarissa S. Batino
Inquirer News Service

THE PHILIPPINE Long Distance Telephone Co. will make permanent its P10/call promo for national long distance calls within the network starting Sept. 21.

Butch Jimenez, PLDT's senior vice president and head of retail, said the company would charge a minimal administration and handling fee of P20 a month for those willing to subscribe to the P10/call rate.

"With this permanent plan, subscribers can continue to make cheaper unlimited NDD calls without having to worry about incurring huge phone bills," said Jimenez.

The promo, which started on Feb. 14, helped revive consumer interest in fixed-line service. PLDT's P10/call rate will be initially available within its network of two million customers.

"PLDT's permanent NDD plan may soon include calls to other fixed line and mobile phone carriers," said Jimenez.

The company's head of legal Rogelio Quevedo said the P10/call rate can be made available to competitors once they agree to cut the fees they charge to calls coming from PLDT.

aye, if you could only invest in pltl

no telecom towers, no ugly poles, almost no technical staff, almost all of its operations are outsourced.

only one focus to provide low cost cellualar service to 9 million current subscribers

TEL could drop down to 1525 based on that inverted pennant he had from last week.

argh! wag naman sana. bought this stock a few weeks ago at 1535. was going to sell at 1700 but i decided to let the profits run a little huhuhu. anyway, if your predictions are right, might have to sell or hold long term.
