Better than expected inflation data sends Wall street back to year highs. Asia that was already higher yesterday, was flat to lower today. Our PSEi was lower throughout the day but the usual mysterious hand showed up at the last few minutes to prop up our index.
Much of the NFs was concentrated on EDC AC ALI ICT, while TEL GLO MEG URC SECB enjoyed NFB Status.
Index leaders were MER 183 URC 23.25 PCOR 6.10 (on speculation of a tender offer at 6.80), while losers were PX EDC TEL FPH.

Wall street trades flat then closes high on American Federal Reserve pledging to keep rates low. Our Psei opens lower, climbs to 3099, then dips back into the red before closing only slightly higher.
Volume was only about 2B by past 11:00 a.m., but apparently some crosses keep us above the 3B mark by the close. This is largely due to big volume for the most actives: AP TEL ALI AGI EDC ICT BPI.
Overall top gainers was led by index heavyweight TEL 2580, which encompassed 12 psei points, followed by BPI MEG MBT SMPH. Top index losers were ALI AC AEV MER BDO PCOR.

Some apprehension as the Dow approaches recent high of 10,767, but since a lot of cash are still on the sidelines, dips are being bought into as the same time rallies are being sold into. That’s why Dow recovers a half percent drop by the close.
Not to be outdone, local equities were lower by about 11 to 15 points during most of the day, but some last second buys for bluechips saw us higher by 8.
Leading the few index gainers were MER 180, ALI 11.50, AEV 14, BPI 45.50, JFC 58.50, JGS 8.30, PCOR 5.7 RLC 14, MEG 1.30.

The PSEi lost about 20 points from the day high, leaving the index with only a 3 point gain by the close, on very thin volume, as the rest of the globe suffers from Dow ten-seven-phobia.
Win, Lose, and unchanged ratio were fairly evenly distributed today, with gainers being led by aev 13.5, mer 175, dmc 12.75.
Watching VLL was like watching the Pacquiao Clottey fight. Everytime people bought into the ask price of 2 seller, Clottey/Regis comes back covering his face in the same way Regis posts selling his truckloads of shares. And just like the Pacman win, VLL buyers won slightly with a close of 2.04 but it wasn’t a spectacular knock out.

For wall street, it was same old story, different chronology and ending. Their opening was about half a percent down, then flat for the better part of the day, then up about half a percent by the close on fewer than expected job loss data, plus narrowing deficit.
Asia was more or less still flat, with Japan’s Nikkei still surging on. Local stocks had TEL’s heavy market capitalization as the primary influence in the index move. Losing 120 pesos to 2560 (after day low of 2550) which was worth 34 psei points, or over half the index’s loss. TEL went 141 pesos ex-cash dividend today, which means people who wanted the dividend had YESTERDAY as the last day to hold TEL to be entitled to it.

Still more or less a flat session for wall street. Asia thus turns positive at the open but flattens again, reportedly on worse than expected inflation data from China, which thereby signifies more tightening or rate increases soon.
Our own local PSEi also experienced some last few minutes sell-off from MPI 2.80, SMPH 9.5, FGEN 10, and then some. Roughly 1/3 of the index stocks were losers, to about only 7 gainers led by DMC 12.75, ALI 11.27, AEV 12.75, AC 302.5 FPH 52.50, URC SMCB.

TOTAL FOREIGN SELLING : P 907,404,025.25
As with yesterday’s tally, TEL’s 303m nfb was again largely responsible for the net foreign buy side, joined by PX 63M, GLO 23M, MBT 105M, EDC 17M, ALI 47M, and that’s about it.
For the NFS equities we have: RLC 29M, AEV 10M, AP 43M (but still high at 12), SCC 34M.
There were only 6 index stock decliners: ALI BDO MWC SM ICT MEG, plus some unchanged, with 1/3 minor gainers led by aev smc edc tel.

Lackluster sideways Wall Street = Lackluster Sideways Global Equities. See, understanding this market is fairly easy, making money on it is not.
Getting the next hottest tip or breakout signal then getting whipsawed, doing number crunching and coming up with cheap valuations yet stocks like FPH refuse to budge for 5 months, how will we have known unless we have bought JGS, AP SINO today? These three top gainers JGS 8 (up on Cebu Pac IPO prospects), AP 11.75, SINO .32 (up on APC’s rise to .64 but inability to surpass .65 resistance), were joined by index heavies FGEN 9.9 MWC 11.50, EDC 4.80, in a day where you either had these on hand previously or you didn’t.
